Excerpts
from the book "The Hungry Spirit" by
Charles Handy. "...life
is not just business. They sense that, maybe,
it is love and friendship, a responsibility
for others or a belief in a cause of some
sorts, not money, that makes a real difference
to the way life goes, even though it may be
hard work to work out what it is". And so
began the search for meaning, for a life that
is meaningful, for an alternative that
satisfies the soul. The problem
was that in trying to be someone else, i
neglected to concentrate on the person i could
be. That idea was too frightening to
contemplate at the time. I was happier going
along with the conventions of the time,
measuring success in terms of money and
position, climbing ladders which others have
put in my way, collecting things and contacts
rather than giving expression to my own
beliefs and personality. Jimmy
Carter (Sources of Strength):
For most of us it costs us nothing
to preach, to speak about our Christian
beliefs, to attend church services, or
to say: "I'm a Christian." But
there's another element to our
Christianity. We need to ask
ourselves," What have I actually
done that proves my loyalty to Christ?
How many times have I sacrificed my own
well-being for that of others...
during the last five years?"
