The leap of faith always means loving without expecting to be loved in return, without wanting to receive, inviting without hoping to be invited, holding without asking to be held.

Henri Nouwen

Reading Room

These are books which have been reviewed and recommended by us. "A Sense of God and A Feeling of Heaven", "Who is our neighbour" and "The 25 Cents Meal and The $50 Buffet" are written by Robert Kee and distributed by OHF.

The 25 Cents Meal and The $50 Buffet

This is a beautiful coffee table book with photos of our children in Cambodia and Nepal.

The title of this book comes from a 25-cent meal for an orphan in a Cambodian orphanage versus a $50 buffet in a five-star hotel in Singapore.

“What’s a 25-cents meal?” one may ask.

A 25-cent meal is a one-dish meal. It is a soup with everything thrown in and served with a large plate of rice.

This is a typical meal for an orphan in a Cambodian orphanage. A $50 buffet in a five-star hotel in Singapore requires no explanation.

The title contrasts two worlds : poverty and affluence.

This book encourages us to look beyond our comfort zone of affluence and to search deep into our inner self to find meaning in what we do. It seeks to provide one with an alternative career and lifestyle, by volunteering and working in a third world country.

“This book captures the essence of what life truly mean - allowing the love of God to overflow from us to others in need. I would truly encourage those who are so caught up with pursuing earthly possessions to take a step forward in visiting third world countries as a volunteer and experience life with the locals. I believe you would be able to feel for the people there especially when you see the children smiling and holding your hands! That is enough to melt your heart and make you think twice about what life is all about on this earth!"—Dorothy Tan

This book retails at $20. You can get a copy of this book from the following book retailers; Life Bookshops, SKS Books Warehouse, Kinokuniya, Page One, Select Books and Times the Bookshop.

Half-Time

Written by Bob Buford who believes that second half of your life can be better than the first. Much better. But first, you need time to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. So he recommends that a reader call "half-time" to reflect not only on where he's going, but why... It's half-time, a time of revitalisation and for catching new vision for living the second, most rewarding half of your life.

Rich Christians in an age of hunger

Written by Ronald J Sider, it is a landmark book that looks at poverty and affluent Christians who does little to help the poor. Revised in 1990, its views and comments are still relevant. The book discusses the gospel within an economic framework and the evangelical call to action.
