The living condition of the poor is unimaginable for city-dwellers in developed countries. Their shacks are small, often made of plastic sheets, tyres, wooden planks and whatever they can find with no water supply, toilet or electricity. We would like to build a new house for the very poor, especially the elderly who are living alone. Some of their houses are so dilapidated that the roof leaks heavily during the six-month dry season.
OHF has a methodolody of building a low-cost house using concrete stumps, tree trunks, thatch, bamboo strips and a zinc roof. Volunteers can also join our community service program to build such houses from the foundation up in 10 days.
"Until we experience the inconvenience ourselves, we can never really know what it is like to live without sewerage, treated water and electricity. Statistics are cold and meaningless unless we feel, smell and taste poverty ourselves." - Robert Kee
